Customer base does not appreciate (or see any value in) computer generated digital art – AND – they don’t wan’t to subsidize good travel/nature photography…
I have photography of old stone villages in france that have been digitally altered to look like colored pencil sketches – the effect gives the photo depth and character that the original photo lacks. I’m not alone thinking this – comments I would get from customers was “WOW! THAT LOOKS 3D – HOW DID YOU DO THAT?” people would literally stop in their tracks in front of my booth – walk in and study the images for long periods of time… trying to figure out how I did it?
But, when I told them it was a “digital colored pencil translation of an original photograph” – they would be confused…!?
Most women thought I printed a black & white image on canvas and then hand colored it with a colored pencil… Men almost always GOT that everything was done using computer software. However, this was a big problem for me because: women buy art, not men! So, when the wife loses the argument with her husband – my buyer leaves – the original fascination they had with the images is now lost – gone forever…
The other type of person I saw ALOT were male photographers – who peppered me with questions about what programs and processes I used…
then would leave with thanks – that gives me an idea about my own photos!? REALLY? you’re going to steal my idea! F-YOU!
I am just starting the art festival circuit as a photographer – and have been trying to find a niche – and have noticed that women don’t typically like photographic art… and since most of the people coming through my booth were male photographers (who have NO INTENTION OF BUYING SOMETHING)
I started to play with ways of appealing to women (the ART buyers)
but am now finding that they want everything to be done by hand…
they think digital art is just a couple of buttons pushed on a computer and out pops art (definately not the case)
I overheard MANY couples say on their way out of my tent:
“IT’S AMAZING WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH A COMPUTER NOW!”
Contrast this with my experience selling regular photography –
the question I always got was “OHHH – I WANT TO GO THERE… WHERE WAS THAT PHOTO TAKEN?”
Here I encountered a different phenom – ENVY – People don’t want to subsidize what they consider my vacation travel…
“MUST BE NICE TRAVELING AROUND THE WORLD AND BEING ABLE TO WRITE IT OFF ON YOUR TAXES…!”
my comeback is: “WHAT YOUR LOOKING AT IS MY 401K GOING DOWN THE DRAIN…”
them: “JOIN THE CLUB”
what should I do to avoid both of these problems?
